Holiday Home on Minorca – Island Facts
Minorca, one of the four main islands of the Balearics, offers impressive nature and a tranquil alternative to Mallorca and Ibiza. With a total area of 694 km², Minorca is about one and a half times the size of Ibiza but five times smaller than Mallorca. The island stretches over 47 km in length and between 10 and 19 km in width. The narrowest point between Minorca and Mallorca is just 75 km (Cap d’Artrutx – Cap Freu). The island’s airport is located near Mahón and makes it easy to get there. In total, around 94,000 people live on Minorca, while around 700,000 visitors discover the island every year.
Minorca’s varied landscape is characterized by a dry, rocky coast in the north, a green, fertile interior, and a south shaped by impressive rock formations. Here you will find idyllic sandy beaches and hidden coves with crystal-clear water. The Mediterranean climate ensures warm but humid winters and hot, dry summers with average temperatures of over 25 degrees in summer and 14 degrees in winter. With more than 2,450 hours of sunshine per year, Minorca is an ideal destination for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility.

UNESCO declared Minorca a biosphere reserve in 1993. Around 40 percent of the island is forested, and in the center of the island you can find pine and Aleppo pines in large forest areas. Almost 50% of the island is now a landscape and nature conservation area and this fact has contributed to it remaining almost protected from the inconveniences of mass tourism. Minorca seems to want to consciously avoid the sins of its two neighboring islands in the southwest and instead of mass tourism, it prefers to focus on environmentally conscious individual vacationers.
Wonderful bathing bays with snow-white sand and turquoise sea, interesting diving areas, secluded sandy beaches, gorges and picturesque alleys as well as the breathtaking flora and fauna make Minorca a not-too-distant insider tip even in the 21st century.
